ABC wins tender for 38 nuclear emergency gensets at EDF
Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC), one of Europe's leading manufacturers of medium speed
diesel engines, today announced that its 16VDZC emergency diesel generator successfully
completed the stringent qualification tests for nuclear post-Fukushima applications. By
winning the tender and with this qualification, the definitive start has been given to install 38
emergency diesel generators by the end of 2018 at EDF in France.
After the disaster in Fukushima, numerous actions throughout the world were made so that this would
never happen again in the future. The French government asked its nuclear watchdog ASN (Autorité
de Sûreté Nucléaire) to carry out an audit on the safety of the French nuclear installations. For EDF,
one of the measures is to provide all reactors of at least one additional emergency diesel generator by
the end of 2018.
In 2013, extremely strict procedures and qualification tests were written so that emergency diesel
generators would be reliable in the harshest and most demanding environments. After a long
international tendering round with several competing companies, the group Clemessy/ABC/Orys
received green light to supply 36 diesel emergency generators at 11 different locations. An option was
also obtained for the delivery of two emergency diesel generators for the site of Fessenheim and two
emergency diesel generators which will serve as a replacement for existing emergency generators.
ABC's 16VDZC medium speed emergency diesel generator, with a rotational speed of 1000 rpm, has
been extensively tested and subjected to the most stringent nuclear regulations and endurance tests
during more than three months on a test bench. The work was carried out by five teams of each two
persons. The emergency diesel generator ran without interruption over 1,800 hours and produced a
total of 2.8 GWh. It is characterized by its reliability and longevity. Anglo Belgian Corporation is
extremely proud to announce that it is the first manufacturer in the world to fully pass the extremely
rigorous qualification testing.
The delivery of ABC's diesel emergency generators will run from early September 2016 until the end
of March 2018, thus the employment at the manufacturing site in Ghent for that period is already
guaranteed.
Tim Berckmoes, CEO of Anglo Belgian Corporation, said: "Our emergency diesel generator passing the
particularly rigorous qualification tests is an important milestone for our company. The allocation of
this EDF project gave our employees a huge boost, but we also had to cope with a lot of challenges. I
particularly wish to thank all the employees of the project for their dedication, focus and perseverance."
